My Thoughts: Top 10 Places to Dine in Buffalo

The Night I Learned Buffalo Was a Real Food City

You know that moment when you've been in a city for three days, eating wings and beef on weck like a good tourist, and then someone drags you to a 35-seat room on the West Side and you realize you've been an idiot? That was me at Las Puertas in 2026.

I'd spent 25 years as a CRO telling clients "Buffalo's a wings town, keep expectations low." Then Chef James Roberts put a plate in front of me that blended modern Mexican with classic French technique at 385 Rhode Island Street, and I had to publicly apologize to an entire city.

The One That Made Me Eat My Words

Las Puertas is the reason this list exists. It's a 35-seat room where everything rotates every five weeks—the menu, the produce, my understanding of what Buffalo can do. At $95 per guest for the core tasting (with optional wine and agave pairings), it's the priciest meal on this list, but I've paid triple for worse in Manhattan.

Reservations through Tock are essential, and if you want a weekend slot in 2026-2027, plan ahead like you're booking a flight. Open Wednesday through Saturday, 5-9 PM only, no walk-ins.

Pros: Best technique in the city, genuinely intimate pace, menu freshness, thoughtful pairings. Cons: Limited hours, reservations only.

The $3 Meal That Beats Most $30 Ones

I'm not proud of how many times I've eaten at Ted's Hot Dogs during research. But here's the thing—founded in 1927 by Greek immigrant Theodore Spiro Liaros, this place has been charcoal-broiling footlongs over real flame for nearly a century. A footlong with the works, fries, and a frozen loganberry costs a few dollars, and it delivers more Buffalo character than meals five times the price.

Counter-service only. Narrow menu. But the smoke from that open charcoal grill? No boiled or steamed competitor touches it. For the most Buffalo meal you can eat and the best value in the city by a wide margin, this is it.

The Rest of the Story

The Dapper Goose at 491 Amherst Street in Black Rock has been open since 2016, and it's the kind of chef-driven seasonal New American room that locals return to because the quality holds steady. Dark Monday and Tuesday, books up weekends.

Giancarlo's Sicilian Steakhouse at 5110 Main Street in Williamsville blends bold Sicilian flavors with American steakhouse traditions. It's a drive from downtown, firmly in the $$$$ range, but the combination of serious beef and genuine Italian cooking is its signature.

Russell's Steaks, Chops & More at 6675 Transit Road in Williamsville has earned national OpenTable Top 100 honors for food and romance. Classic steakhouse, big portions, romantic atmosphere. If you want a traditional steak dinner done right, this is the benchmark.

Anchor Bar at 1047 Main Street is the certified birthplace of the Buffalo wing, created in 1964. Eating wings here is part food, part pilgrimage. Tourist-heavy, wings carry the menu, but ordering them at the source is a Buffalo rite of passage that holds up in 2026-2027.

Chef's in Larkinville has been open since 1923, and eating there in 2026 carries the same weight it did decades ago. Red-sauce classics, hearty pastas, generous plates. Traditional menu, busy peak times, but the definitive old-school Buffalo Italian experience.

Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant at 56 West Chippewa Street in the historic Calumet building anchors downtown's entertainment district with a deep wine list and elevated New American menu. Prime location, versatile menu, historic setting. Best wine-driven dinner downtown.

Bella Ciao in North Buffalo's Hertel area brings a more contemporary Italian sensibility with house-made pastas and a menu that feels closer to a modern trattoria. Higher tier, fills on weekends, but the best modern Italian option for freshness over nostalgia.

Mulberry Italian Ristorante just south in Lackawanna is described as equal parts restaurant and experience, serving authentically delicious Italian meals in a setting locals return to for special occasions.

What I Actually Tell Clients Now

For the single best meal in Buffalo, book Las Puertas and its rotating tasting menu. For the most authentic local experience on any budget, get a charcoal dog and a loganberry at Ted's Hot Dogs. Between those poles sit a genuinely strong middle: The Dapper Goose for chef-driven New American, Giancarlo's and Russell's for steak, Anchor Bar for the original wing, and Chef's, Bella Ciao, and Mulberry for the city's deep Italian tradition, with Bacchus covering downtown wine-and-dine.

Every one is open and bookable in 2026-2027, and together they proved to this jaded CRO that Buffalo is far more than a wings town.
