How do you start a paintless dent repair (PDR) business in 2027?
PDR removes minor dents (door dings, hail damage, small creases) without paint or filler. Low overhead, high skill ceiling, and hail storms are the once-a-year revenue spike that makes or breaks the year.
Startup costs. Among the lowest in auto: a quality PDR tool kit (rods, glue-pull tabs, slide hammer, blending hammers, knockdowns, lighting): mid four figures for a serious starter set. PDR-specific LED light boards are non-negotiable. Mobile rig (van or pickup) optional - many start out of an SUV. Training is the real investment: 2-12 week PDR schools cost mid four to low five figures. Realistic all-in for trained, mobile, working: low-to-mid five figures.
Permits/licenses/insurance. LLC + business license. Garage liability + commercial auto. Some states require a registered repair facility designation. Insurance-direct repair program (DRP) approval is its own paperwork track.
Customer acquisition. Body shop subcontract work is the bread-and-butter (B2B, predictable, lower margin). Dealership reconditioning contracts. Insurance hail-storm catastrophe work (high revenue but you chase storms). Direct-to-consumer GBP/Yelp for ding removal. Used-car dealer routes.
Revenue model. Per-dent or per-panel pricing for retail. Body shop wholesale rates lower. Hail catastrophe billed per-panel by matrix - this is where solo techs can clear a year of income in 60 days.
Year-1 outlook. Highly skill-gated. Trained tech with body-shop relationships: livable. Self-taught without contracts: very rough.
