What to Look For in a Phoenix Public High School

• Charter vs. traditional: Tuition-free charters like BASIS offer the most rigorous AP-driven curriculum but a demanding workload; traditional district schools (Hamilton, Desert Vista) offer broader programs and athletics.
• District strength: Chandler Unified, Tempe Union, and Paradise Valley Unified are among the metro's strongest. The district often matters as much as the individual school.
• Admission and zoning: Charters and magnets (BASIS, University High) use lottery or application; comprehensive schools require living in the attendance zone.
• Programs and fit: Match the school to the student -- maximum rigor (BASIS, ACP) versus a balanced comprehensive experience with athletics and arts.
• Outcomes: Look at graduation rates, AP participation, and college matriculation, not just rankings.
