Step 2: Choose Salt or Medication

You have two main treatment paths. Pick one based on your fish and plants.

Aquarium salt. Dissolving aquarium salt (sodium chloride, not marine salt or table salt with additives) at roughly 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, raised in stages, kills the free-swimming stage and is gentle on most fish. Salt is inexpensive and effective, especially combined with heat. However, salt-sensitive fish (many catfish/corydoras, loaches, and tetras) and live plants do not tolerate it well, so use lower doses or choose medication if you keep them.

Ich is often introduced on new fish, plants, or water from an infected source, and it takes hold when fish are stressed by poor conditions or temperature swings.

After treatment, gradually return the temperature to normal, replace the activated carbon to remove any residual medication, and resume regular maintenance.

Sensitive Species and the Salt-vs-Medication Decision

Before you dose anything, identify what is actually living in your tank, because the standard treatments are not safe for everyone. Many of the fish and animals kept in freshwater aquariums react badly to either copper-based medications, malachite green, or elevated salt — and the wrong choice can kill the very fish you are trying to save.

Scaleless and soft-bodied fish — including most catfish (corydoras, plecos), loaches, and freshwater eels — absorb medications and salt far more readily through their skin than scaled fish do. Treat the whole display tank when ich has clearly spread — visible spots on multiple fish, flashing across the group. Because the parasite cycles through the substrate and water, every fish in that tank has already been exposed. Pulling out only the spotted fish leaves cysts behind to reinfect the rest. The downside is that medication can stress or kill your biological filter bacteria, harm plants and inverts, and stain silicone or decor. Heat-and-salt is generally safer for a planted display tank than dyes are.

Use a hospital tank when you keep sensitive plants, inverts, or scaleless fish you don't want to medicate, or when only a quarantined newcomer is affected. A bare-bottom hospital tank (no gravel) makes daily cyst removal dramatically easier — you can siphon the floor clean each day — and lets you dose aggressively without worrying about plants or copper-binding substrate. If you go this route, remember the original display tank is still contaminated. Run it fishless at elevated temperature for the duration of the parasite's cycle so the theronts hatch, find no host, and die off.

Preventing the Next Outbreak

Ich is often called an "opportunistic" parasite because low levels can lurk in a tank and only flare when fish are stressed or when a new carrier is introduced. The cheapest treatment is the one you never have to run.

Quarantine every new arrival for two to four weeks in a separate tank before adding it to your display. This is the single most effective prevention step — most outbreaks ride in on a new fish, a new plant, or even water from a fish-store bag. Quarantine also lets you observe and treat newcomers without medicating your whole established system.

Stabilize temperature. Sudden chills — a heater failure, a cold water change, a drafty winter room — are a classic ich trigger because they stress fish and weaken their immune defenses. A reliable heater and an accurate thermometer go a long way.

Reduce chronic stress. Overcrowding, poor water quality, aggressive tankmates, and unstable parameters all lower a fish's resistance. Keep up with regular partial water changes, avoid overstocking, and dechlorinate all replacement water.
